Patterns on a photographically-challenging grand scale

It has been a fishing haven for centuries, and the mud flats and fields of kelp offer spectacular photographic opportunities. The bamboo poles rising from the mudflats support nets used for the drying of the catch; they create interesting patterns that reflect in the warm waters.

The colours of the sunrise and sunset enhance the picturesque environment, and the movement of the tides create a constantly changing landscape, altering the scene throughout the day.

Details

Fujian is traditionally described as “Eight parts mountains, one part water, and one part farmland”. With its sheltered bays and harbours it is a centre for maritime fishing and aquaculture. The population is as diverse as the landscape – it is said that the local dialects change every 7 miles. The region also has a fascinating colonial history, still evident today, with the Victorian architecture providing an interesting contrast to the more traditional style of building.

Xiapu is a mecca for photographers. It has been a fishing haven for centuries, and the mud flats and fields of kelp offer spectacular photographic opportunities. We use the town as a base for four nights but aim to be out for long photo sessions each day so as to capture a wide range of interesting shots. We've selected the dates for this photo tour to coincide with optimal tides and we just have to hope for some puffy clouds in the sky to make for perfect compositions.

Day-to-day itinerary
  • Day 1: Arrival day You will be met at Fuzhou International airport (code: FOC) and transferred to our hotel. Later there will be a chance to meet the other photographers at dinner (D)
  • Day 2: To Xiapu We drive up to Xiapu and, after settling in to our comfortable base hotel, head out for the first photo excursion. (BLD)
  • Basing ourselves in this charming fishing area, we have time to explore and find the perfect shooting conditions. We will be able to take advantage of the spectacular morning and evening light, and the movement of the tides, to capture the fishermen at work. The fishermen here were known as the “Gypsies of the Sea” and were forbidden from coming ashore. Even today, many still prefer the life on the ocean and live in floating villages along the shoreline. Kelp, oysters, and other marine products are harvested and dried in fishing nets suspended from bamboo poles erected in the mud flats, offering interesting symmetries and perspectives.
  • Days 3-5: Xiapu and beyond We will have two excursions each day to capture images in the best light. We allow a certain amount of flexibility in the program to take advantage of the prevailing conditions. There is plenty of time to explore the area in depth and to compile a portfolio of the many varied aquaculture types and patterns. (BLD)
  • Day 6: Last photos We have one more morning shoot before returning to Fuzhou. In the evening there will be a special farewell dinner. (BLD)
  • Day 7: Departure day You will be transferred to Fuzhou airport in time for your flight. Check-out is normally 12:00. Please enquire about a later check-out if you have an evening flight. (B)
